Weed Management

We provide the most appropriate combination of techniques to achieve cost- effective and environmentally sound results.  We consider factors such as the nature of the weed problem,  the biology of the weeds and, site-specific factors including  the environment, adjacent vegetation, land uses and topography. By combining techniques including herbicides  use, mechanical weed control (including
aquatic weed harvesting), manual methods, biological control and habitat manipulation an excellent result is achieved.

Herbicide & Pesticide Use

Weed Management is a specialised service whether it is treating noxious or environmental weeds with total (non-selective) or selective herbicides.

By targeting problem weeds we minimise spray drift on to desired
vegetation, because we choose the most desirable herbicide that achieves the best result with the minimum risk to the environment and the applicator. We also select the best herbicides for a given task, protecting the biological diversity of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. Uncontrolled weeds have the potential to:

  • Drastically reduce biological diversity.
  • Affect ecological health of plant communities.
  • Affect environmental values of different areas.
  • Affect scenic amenity of rivers, parks and reserves

Aquatic Weed Management

Aquatic Weed Management is a specialist field of weed control. Many of Sydney's water bodies and waterways have aquatic weed problems.
These include the George's River, Cooks River, Hawkesbury-Nepean River and many wetlands and lakes.

We are involved in the control and management of the three most serious noxious aquatic weeds in Sydney, i.e. Alligator Weed, Water Hyacinth and Salvinia.  We also have experience in managing another problematic aquatic weed which is Caulerpa taxifolia. This weed is common in the Port Hacking River and requires manual submersed management. We have a diver equiped and experienced in this protocol.

Noxious Weed Management

Understanding Herbicides It is critical for success to understand the factors that influence each Herbicide’s effectiveness. For example, some foliage-applied herbicides have ‘contact’ action only while others are ‘systemic’, travelling within plants to target sites to bring about death. Other soil-applied herbicides have residual activity making it crucial to understand their persistence, degradation patterns and leaching potential. Certain herbicide formulations can be manipulated with additives to make them more effective at lesser dose rates, saving herbicide costs. Herbicides can be either non-selective (affecting most plants) or selective (affecting only specific groups of plants). Selective herbicides enable grasses, hedges and other narrow-leaf species to be controlled without affecting the surrounding desirable broad-leaf species. If used correctly, the risks from herbicides to human health (weed control operators and the wider community) and to the environment can be minimised. Our operators are experienced in applying herbicides using best practice guidelines, safeguarding the environment and human health. We also maintain strict safety standards at all times through the use of safety plans to minimise all risks. "Declared Plants" or "Noxious Weeds" vary between Councils. The State Government has gazetted problem weeds that should be controlled on a routine basis, some of which include :

* Lantana camara : Lantana
* Rhubus fruiticosa : Blackberry
* Ricnus communis : Caster Oil Plant
* Alternanthera philoxeriodes : Alligator Weed
* Hypercicum perforatum : St John's Wort
* Cortaderia selloana : Pampas Grass
* Cestrum parqui : Green Cestrum
* Pariateria judaica : Asthma Weed
* Ludwigia peruviana : Ludwigia
* Salvinia molesta : Salvinia
* Eichhornia crassipes : Water Hyacinth
* Bachharis halimifolia : Groundsel Bush
* Senecio madagascariensis : Fireweed
* Sporobolus pyramidalis : Rat's Tail

Projects & Clients

Most recent examples of our weed management have been for Royal National Park and Botany Bay National Park both part of the Dept of Environment and Climate Change.

Weed management undertaken in these areas was the management of Green Cestrum, Ludwigia and Lantana.
